The mind of an engineer

Dean sent this invitation via email to the 13 students who work for him:

I would like to invite you (and spouse or fiance) to eat dinner with my family and have a family home evening on [upcoming date.] We will meet at [restaurant] for a group dinner and then will come back to my house (nearby) for a short family home evening. Please RSVP and let me know who is coming and if you need a ride or can offer a ride.

One of his students sent this response, in its entirety:

I went though the code and added a subroutine. But it still doesn’t converge.

    I don’t even get it.

All I can say is that, to the very best of our knowledge, he wasn’t trying to be ironic or clever or funny–he just was more focused on code than on responding to an invitation.

hahaha! (now I can laugh–thanks to zina’s clarifying comment)

  3. Acheté says:

People who expect to make the code converge just by adding a subroutine are like people who don’t know any way of sending an email other than replying to the last message, without necessarily reading it (or even the subject heading).
