Happy 13th this weekend, Dean!

Last night I was telling Dean that it seems like with divorce rates so high and marriages so fragile, the traditional associations for anniversaries need adjusting upwards for inflation.   Our conversation inspired me to make these two lists (item 3 on the second list was his idea):

Wedding anniversary associations, adjusted for inflation:

1st year: Sapphire anniversary
2nd year: Emerald anniversary
3rdyear : Ruby anniversary
4th year:  Diamond anniversary
5th year: Sapphire, emerald, ruby, and diamond anniversary
6th year: Three nights in Manhattan and Broadway tickets anniversary
7th year: Gold anniversary
8th year: Week in Paris anniversary
9th year: Two weeks on an island in the Caribbean anniversary
10th year: Owning your own houseboat anniversary
25th year: Owning your own cabin in the mountains anniversary
50th year: Owning your own island in the Caribbean anniversary

Wedding anniversary associations, adjusted for reality:

1st year: Ramen anniversary
2nd year: Diaper anniversary
3rd year: Duct tape anniversary
4th year: New washing machine anniversary
5th year: Moving van anniversary
6th year: ER copay anniversary
7th year: New transmission anniversary
8th year: New furnace anniversary
9th year: New roof anniversary
10th year: Finishing the basement anniversary
25th year: Root canal/bridge work anniversary
50th year: Matching walkers anniversary

I love you, Dean!  Let’s aim to hobble around the Caribbean on matching gold-plated walkers.

  1. That is great! Luckily there is no “therapy for the kids for all the crap we put them through” anniversary or “rehab for kids” anniversary. Whew!

  2. Mrs. Organic Says:

What a beautiful photo of the both of you. I was going to say that Blaine sure has some catching up to do after I read the first list, but then realized we’re right on target with the second one.

  3. Thora Says:

I love the wedding photo! I did get my first washer and dryer, three months before our fourth anniversary…mmm…looks like a pretty accurate list. Moving Van’s coming up next! (Or maybe I’ll get lucky, and skip straight to the ER co-pay).

  4. Heather Says:

I love your adjusted for reality list! Very fun!

  5. Trina Says:

Ah, I remember you when. Definitely agree with the revised list, though we’re coming up on 15 in a couple of weeks and I’m bound and determined to get a night away without the kids to celebrate (even if we end up celebrating with a bottle of sparkling cider in front of a campfire!).

Here’s hoping you get to celebrate a little without any dental work or a trip to the ER being involved.

Laura: I knew I was forgetting something!

Mrs. O: Glad to hear you are keeping up with list 2. (Or should I say sorry to hear it?) (And actually at our speed it looks like finishing the basement will have to be for the 25th anniversary since we’re already past the 10th and nowhere near getting the basement done.)

Thora: Thanks! May you skip as many as possible . . .

    Heather: Thanks!

    Trina: How are you feeling?
I don’t even know what Dean and I are going to do to celebrate–often we try to do something in the fall because July is hectic (Henry and Ike’s birthdays come right after our anniversary.)

  7. Jen Says:

Love it. We just had our fifth and were wondering about these. Luckily we have only had to move twice. (So far.) What a delightful picture! Congratulations.

  8. Melanie J Says:

    Hey, that’s our list, too.

  9. That was just plain hilarious! The second list is just as it should be. :)

  10. Kate Says:

Why is it that after 10 years you only get to celebrate your wedding every 15-25 years?

  11. zstitches Says:

I don’t know, Kate. Maybe it’s because by then it is old news that you are married. Maybe because by then life is going by so fast that 15-25 years seems like one year? Maybe because by then you’re so tired of each other that you don’t want to commemorate the event. Or (and this is the one I’m putting my money on) maybe it is because the list-makers are lazy.

  12. Hannah Says:

I remember getting flowers for my 3 month anniversary. What happened to celebrating months? Sadly I had to wait until my 5 1/2 year anniversary for the washer and dryer but oh how I love them.
