I heart Joe Raposo

You may find yourself cutting off and hemming six pairs of holey-kneed kids’ jeans — cut, overlock, turn under, press, stitch, stitch again, repeat x12. And you might not be enjoying the process at all. You might then ask yourself why you even do it, and you might muse that it’s because you don’t like the ragged look, nor the stringy bits coming off in the wash, and that it’s therefore either a labor of love, or just a manifestation of obsessive-compulsive tendencies. Meanwhile, you might find that “This American Life” doesn’t carry well over the noise of the sewing machine (earphones are hard to wear while sewing, so instead you use standalone speakers, but can’t turn the volume up too loud without waking up the kids sleeping in the room just above your sewing room.) And you might be lucky enough to have siblings hip enough to have included Sesame Street offerings when they set you up with their iTunes libraries, and you might start searching by “Artist,” and you might stumble across the name in the title of this blog post, and find yourself listening to:

“Rubber Duckie”

and ” Bein’ Green”

and “I’m Pretty”

(Sorry, I couldn’t find the older version of this, the one with the baby seal.)

This will make the job go, oh so much more quickly and pleasantly.  You might start reminiscing about your best childhood summers, and then picturing all the fun your kids will have this summer while wearing their newly-shortened jeans, and you might even decide that the hemming is definitely about love.

I too heart Raposo, and I also heart the reality of your imaginary blog.

I was just thinking about blogging about Roposo yesterday. (the poem Someone Nice, to be specific). (I know, big surprise and go figure) :)

Oh, and the last time I googled Ray Charles’ version of that song, I couldn’t find it–nice to see it’s there now!

Incidentally, you may have noticed that SS clips don’t seem to get pulled for infringement rights–I read some time back that the CTW decided not to fight it–rather to join it, and started their own channel of clips on their website. It’s got lots of good stuff, but so far is not nearly as navigable as YouTube. At any rate, I’m happy that they (so far) allow the clips to stay on YouTube.

Yup, Lili, I’d have pointed that out myself if I hadn’t had to run to a Relief Society meeting. They only had the newer version of Rubber Duckie, though.

Yeah, like I say, The fans’ selection is better than the official site’s selection.

Jeff Moss composed “Rubber Duckie”, but I’m sure Joe would smile reading your triblogute to him! Keep up the great work making people everywhere aware of his name and all he did for the music of our childhoods!
