Stylish Rose

Rose has been having a tantrummy week, and today she decided she didn’t want to get dressed, have lunch, or take her nap.  I settled on making her take her nap, during which she screamed periodically until finally (an hour later) she was ready to get dressed and have lunch.  Then she was in a cheerful and extremely chatty mood.  The following is as much as I can remember of one of her monologues, starting as she was looking in the mirror right after I’d done her hair.  (There was much more than this, but this was all I could remember by the time I got to the computer.)

“I look stylish*! Thank you, Mommy! Do I look like a Punzel? [Runs downstairs.] Hey Mabel, I look like Miss Punzel. I’m stylish! [Comes back upstairs.] We have two duckies and one Lambie. I love my two duckies and one Lambie. [Finds another duck.] Oh, we do have three ducks! A mommy duckie, a honey** duckie, and a baby duckie! And a very daddy Lambie!”

*Mabel’s word for this at Rose’s age was “fashion,”as in, “I look very fashion!”

**We think a honey means a kid about Rose’s age.

Well this particular creation was 40% off at Old Navy the other day . . . however, it does look like things I would like to sew, if I could just find the time. :)

Honey sounds to me on the order of pet names she hears someone call someone else instead of their proper name–so that it becomes a title along the lines of “sister” the way Grandma Marie calls her girls and granddaughters or a pronoun like “me.”

Dominic called himself Bugbug Honeydogdog for awhile. Bugbug was easy: it was his official nickname. Honeydogdog was harder to figure: later it dawned on me that at that age he couldn’t say Huntington yet.

Is Rose’s “honey” a sub for a word she can’t say yet?

Yes, I think it’s a substitute for a word she doesn’t know the word for — toddler, or little kid — and it’s also come from our calling her “honey” so much. She’s also been known to use it as a noun; for example, when she wants to switch roles with us she’ll say, “Okay, now I’ll be the Mommy, and you be the honey.” She sometimes used the word “sweetie” in the same way, as in, “You’re the Daddy, and I’m your little sweetie.”

P.S. Mabel informs me that there’s an episode of “Super Why” in which Rapunzel decides to cut her hair because wearing it long is too hot; after she cuts it, she wears it in pigtails, and says, “I look stylish!” When Rose looked in the mirror and said she looked stylish, she pronounced the word slowly and carefully, as though trying it out for the first time.

I finally made it to your blog! Thanks so much for all your cute comments. It is so fun to look at your pictures and read about your kids! It’s been so long since I’ve seen you!!! Your kids are ADORABLE! You have a really cute family and it was fun reading about them!

Thanks, Mindy! Isn’t it fun how blogs let us keep on each others’ lives a little more? It would be fun to see you in person some time, too — I think Mabel and Sierra would love talking about dogs. :) (On the other hand, it would give Mabel one more opportunity to be reminded how cruel Dean and I are that we won’t get her one.)
